It is my understanding that the bee which pollinates the vanilla plant is extinct and vanilla plants have to be hand pollinated. Both of which were native to mexico.
The bees are not extinct, just severely depleted in numbers.
Also, many perfumes are made from whale puke.
Beaver tails are amazing!
I wouldnt go so far as to say that somebody needs to F the FDA in the A but I will say that my trust for them is nearly nonexistant.
Oh dear, I am drinking one of those Starbucks double shot energy drinks- VANILLA LIGHT
it is making a hole in my stomach. beaver pee burns.
@Centropomus not so common anymore, actually. synthetics are much easier than actual whale puke.
Making a whale puke requires the world's largest finger.
@Centro- Whale puke, that is so icky. I know that Taurine originally came from bull bile (hence the name Red Bull).
@Dally- It is artificial vanilla that is made from beaver piss. Real vanilla is A-OK.
I have this book that is like a glossary of ingredients, and the beaver pee one was pretty icky. There was another one involving beef blood, I think it was listed as a "Natural flavoring" that is used in ketchup.
Beetles are used to make red food coloring (as in Campari) but caramel coloring is carbohydrate based.
It's not beaver urine that is used, it's their musk scent. In the wild it's mixed with urine but for FDA approved use it can't contain urine.
well now there's some sense.
a lot of people look down upon vanilla when in actuality they havent even had the real thing.
I've always thought beavers smelt pretty tasty.
hey- they're kinda like your platypus
in a few small ways...
Platypi smell kind of gross. :-(
I think I'd actually rather consume most of the items in this thread than Vanilla Coke.
That is because vanilla coke is disgusting.
I'd steer clear of the platypus though, -j.
what about platypus eggs?
Coke: Platypus would be a marketing coup. Although I shudder to think what artificial platypus flavour is made from.
and the platypus mammary glands?
you could have a breakfast of milk and eggs and bacon from ONE ANIMAL!
although platypus bacon is probably tiny
that just made me incredibly sad
Is it weird that I am way less grossed out by beetle powder food coloring than synthetic dyes?
@ hey_oblomov No because beetles are natural. Synthetic dyes are basically cancer. So. I agree!
that is one hairy beaver!
@Bedazzler also, hence the name Taurine.
urine with t & a !!
@(imaginary)libi There are still sailors who retire off of ambergris. It's less common as a proportion of the market, thanks to Calvin Klein making perfume more mainstream, but a lot of the more traditional perfumes still use it.
@centro- exactly. I hate when I hear a name that sounds like an animal (in ingredients) because I know it is about to get gross.
So, the gland that make urine stinky in animals is the castor gland. Castration...I guess I know why they call it that now.
Now I am looking up the origin of words. I'm a nerdy nerd.
Amber Gris... Amber Griswald?
